Lenka is a girl who loves to wear her mismatched outfits and, especially, the socks her grandmother Nana knitted her. When Lenka is wearing her handmade socks, she feels like magical things happen to her.
However, one day she puts them in the dryer and they shrink. Lenka feels like her life has lost its magic. She tells her grandmother about the accident and Nana gets to work to knit a new pair of socks. Just before she finishes, Nana puts a spell on the yarn to always protect her granddaughter.
You can grab the English or Bulgarian translation of the book as an ebook or in print. For limited time only with any purchase, you'll also get the Bulgarian ebook version for free.
This labor of love has been inspired by the special bond shared between grandparents and grandchildren. Not only do our Bulgarian grandmothers love to knit socks for us, their grandchildren, but they are also our biggest cheerleaders and protectors. They worry about us, look after us and bless us with every hot cup of linden tea, every old-fashioned saying, and every hand-knitted pair of wool socks. We dedicate this story to them.
Born and raised in Bulgaria Magdalena Georgieva moved to the U.S. for college and remained in Cambridge, MA to pursue her career here. She has been working on the creation of Lenka's socks for several years now. Beyond dabbling in writing children's stories, Magdalena's full-time gig is as a product manager at HubSpot and in her spare time she runs BuiltInBG.
